Well I figured trying to find hens teeth would be easier.
I have had a bit of noise from the front hub so stripped it down last night. It is a Deore LX (M570) which is a nice, sealed design. OPened it up and was most dismayed to find that the cones were showing signs of pitting (OK, more than just signs) and the ball bearings were doing likewise. The bearing races in the hub were fine.
I found the exploded service diagram for the hub and so I have the part numbers I need (cones and balls), any one got any idea where I can get individual spares? Or do I have to just sacrifice this otherwise perfect hub on the altar of unserviceability and just leave it to gradually grind itself to pieces? I could obviously replace the cones with generic ones but then I would lose the seals, and I'm not sure generic ones would fit.

Cones are among the few bits one can get 🙂 Take it to a bike shop and get them to find you the same bit. I have some on order atm.. its never been an issue 🙂
