"it looks like it will come to a sprint with about 50/60 riders Ivanov attacks again; the others are caught by the bunch, Ivanov gives up. 1 km to go: gruppo compatto... Petacchi leads the peloton for Zabel The sprint has started and the winner is
Stefano Garzelli"
WTF?
He has some snap, but that's wild.

Garzelli does have the ability to pull off a nice sprint on occasion - like Bettini, though not nearly as often. But it's pretty surpising that he pulled that off against that group. He got onto Petacchi's wheel instead of Zabel - that's a pretty good leadout (heh), but you have to have the power to take advantage of it, of course.

From the profile it appears the lead in to the sprint was downhill. Don't know what difference that could have made, but it wasn't a classic drag race finish.
the sprint itself was actually a slight uphill drag. Petacchi made a show of leading out Zabel, who was nowhere near his wheel after the last corner, frantically looking back while Garzelli went from quite far out. Hondo was boxed in and had trouble relaunching, and the next big thing in german sprinting (Ciolek) would have caught Garzelli had the line been a meter further.
