Hi folks, my name is Rob and I could use some advice. I work for the government and my bosses are looking to purchase some mountain bikes. They'd be used by different guys of different size. The budget is around $400. They'd be used in some pretty rugged terrain as well, so I guess budget and durability are the top two req's, respectively.
The bosses are looking at the Smith and Wesson Police model. I think it's a hokey idea and that they are only seeing brand name... If any of ya'll have any advice, I'd sure like to hear it. I'm a big outdoors guy, used to work at REI, but have limited knowledge of mountain bikes. (I have a K2 Zed 3.0 that needs some more miles on it!) It'd be nice to go to the bosses with soemthing better than the S&W.

Here are five. Trek makes a Police Bike, but the MSRP is $1049. The 4300 ($389) and 4500 ($519) would be more in your price range. If your needs require more serious dirt riding, I'd look at the lower end of the Gary Fisher Genesis hardtail range. The Marlin ($549) or the Wahoo ($429) might work. The longer front of the Genesis geometry stretches out the top tube, giving a more stable ride on the rough stuff. Also remember that most dealers regularly discount these bikes 10-15%.
