im looking to purchase a new groupset, and was going to go with 105 ( im on tiagra right now :o) but would it be better to go with apex, or possibly rival? any feedback would be appreciated

105 will feel like a better version of Tiagra. So if Tiagra wasn't bad for you 105 will be better. That is the jump I took and it is really nice. The new 105 is really well made and will allow you to integrate Ultegra or Dura Ace over time if you want.

If you like the function and ergonomics of Tiagra, then the logical choice is 105. Going with SRAM would be a bigger change as not only are the ergonomics different, but the shifting method is different, too.
