We (my club) has been negotiating with our local council and our local
police to get permission to run a criterium in Kirkcudbright (a local
town) for several months. Now, at last, all the official permission
seems to be in place and we've got to go for it. The date is 27th
August - to coincide with local festivities and two days before the Tour
of Britain comes through the town - so we've very little time.
A commissaire and two judges will be appointed for us by Scottish
Cycling, so I don't have to worry about that. I /think/ we already have
insurance to run an open, but I'll check, and if we don't I'll get that
through British Cycling.
The course is a 630 metre loop through the medieval part of the town,
with start/finish on a wider georgian street. It's a great course. I'm
going to have to straw bale one corner, and put crowd barriers round
about half of the course, but I know where I'm going to get the barriers
from and I think I know where I'll get the bales from.
Our safety assessment says we can have up to 40 cyclists, and I need to
attract about thirty at a time when many people will be on holiday or
will already have booked what they're doing - we'll only find about ten
from our own club who can road race at that level (and who have racing
licences and won't be racing in the SXC mountain bike series that
weekend).
The council have agreed to close the streets. The police will clear
parked cars (I think - I have another meeting with them this afternoon).
So:
I've got to organise marshals, publicity, barrier moving crew, road
signage, leafleting residents, prizes (including primes), changing
rooms, first aid...
What else do I need to organise?
Does anyone with experience of organising crits have a check-list? Would
anyone in the UK with experience of running crits give me some by-email
advice?
