Welcome to my first post...an unashamed cry for help. Living in Northern Indiana, it's getting to be the time of year to pull out my winter hack, a cheap Al framed mountain bike with slicks. This year, I decided to replace the low-end Judy fork with a rigid fork (the bike is for on-road use) Unfortunately, I am having trouble reassembling the headset, which is the cheap Aheadset threadless unit that came with the bike. After having th crown race pressed on the new fork, I have put everything together the way I thought it came apart, but the fork rocked in the frame even when tightened. So, I installed an extra piece underneath the top bearing race that looks like a thin stem spacer that may or may not have come from the headset when I took it apart. Now, the fork will tightene down, but the plastic sealing ring is so loose that I can lift it up and see the bearings underneath. Not how it was before. So, here's the description from top to bottom of the pieces that I assembled, maybe someone can tell me where I went wrong?
1fork crown race 2 bottom plastic sealing ring 3 bearings in retainer 4 bottom headset cup 5 round black metal spacer thing that fits around steerer tube 5 top headset cup 6 bearings in retainer 7 top adjustable race 8 plastic cone shaped ring, cut on one side, 8 top plastic sealing ring.
