Because of retention. The messages you are reading are distributed to
various servers. The operator of a server decides when messages will be
discarded based on some window such as 90 days. Some operators even have
much shorter windows.

So the first post in a thread will be discarded first and you will only
be able to see the replys until they are discarded.

When that happens, I go to the newsgroup and click on "List All." Then I click
on "Edit," at the top of the computer screen and then click on "Find in Top
Window." There is a line where you can type in the topic word and it will find
it for you without your having to scan the whole list. I find a lot of the
original posts that way if they haven't expired. If I try to scan down my eyes
miss a lot. Saves a lot of time.

You can do that trick for any page you might be needing to scan if there is too
much information.
