I'm new to road bikes I mainly ride Mountain bikes XC I planning to ride across country in 2007 I'm giving myself a year to get back into shape after a bad car wreck a while back. The tour is though THe American Lung Assocation which is about the only way I can really afford doing it. I am looking for a road bike now the people who run the tour carry all the EQ so I dont have to worry about that, I have a budget of about $600.00 to $700.00 for a bike so if anyone has any idea please let me know:D I live in south Carolina I once I get a bike I'd like to find some people to ride with locally once I start dropping the weight I want.if anyone has some thing I could use do help training I would like the help or anyother information I could use please feel for to pass it this way thank you :D

On a supported tour you can use a wide variety of bikes. Things I'd suggest would be to get something with a granny gear, a 24t chain ring and a rear cassette with at least a 28t sprocket will help you get over the mountains and get strong wheels, at least 32 spokes and able to put a 28 or 32mm tyre. Also make sure you get a large bike. The bike shop may try to put you
on a small bike which will put you in an aerodynamic racing position. Tell them you want an upright riding position with the bars at saddle height. An inch clearance of the top tube is ample.

You could use a MTB, the gearing will be good, the frame plenty strong, just use 32mm road tyres, or what about a Bianchi Volpe, its got good gearing you'd just have to get it with road tyres rather than the all terrain tyres it come with, or a Bianchi Strada.
