Ok, I just found out my dad has an old speed bike from like 10 years ago and its a Panasonic DX-1000 with a white to teal fade(if you have any info on it let me know) and I'm trying to fix it up. I have a few questions for you guys and I hope you can help me. First off does it matter what tires and tubes I buy for the bike? The rubber on the bike right now has started to crack so I'm not going to try to ride those (good idea?). The other question is what is the "season" for bike riding I know you can do it al year round here in GA but for racing and stuff when does that go on? Thanks for any help and I'm going to try to get a pic of my dad's bike so I can figure out mroe about it and what I might need to do to it to get it in the right shape to ride.

First thing to check is the wheel size, is it 27" or 700c? Are the rims alloy or steel? If it is a 10 speed then it is obsolete, and new wheels with an 8 or 9 casette would be a sensible upgrade. This is certainly the case if the rims are steel, or alloy in poor condition. Brake pads and brake and gear cables should also be replaced. Unless the frame is a really good one then you aren't going to be competing on this bike, so expensive wheels with very light, narrow high-pressure tyres are not required. By something durable that will allow you to train, commute or tour without constant worry about punctures. If you do want to race then don't spend too much money upgrading this one, since you will be saving up for something better.
