Riding 2-3 x a week, 52 yr old fe, no weight issues, but can't get my h/r to stay within training range, on a 10 mi ride am only in it for about 2 min's, the rest is spent above it. Was on a slight hill doing a measly 10mph and my h/r was 171! What the heck am I doing wrong?

Aggravated in TX. 😠Practice my friend. I had the same problem for the first 2 weeks I had my HRM, now, I'm only out of range for like 10 minutes during 1.5 hr ride as an example. Maybe switch to an easier gear?
Just take practice!
Good luck

I'm 55 and there are some hill on my bike route that send my heart rate soaring. It's the nature of the beast. Trekdedicated is right... things will get better the better the shape you get in.

How long have you been cycling? As others have pointed out, it will take a while for your body to get used to it. Also, how did you calculate your max? The 220-age method is statistically good, but you're not a statistic, you're an individual... 171 would still seem pretty high for your age, but maybe not as bad as it sounds - how did you feel when your heart was going like that?

How do you know your zone is really your correct zone? Have you tested for your maxHR? Perhaps your heart beats faster than your zone is calibrated for. I'm 27 and my max HR is around 210. If I calibrated my training zone around the 220 minus age formula, I'd still be finishing up my ride from last Sunday.
