Headset problem on '95 Vision

This is on my "vacation" bike which I only see 2 or 3 times/year so I don't have it here to measure
or otherwise tinker with. I would like to be able to get it in use pretty quickly after my arrival
in Ft Worth on a Saturday night in April (I dont want to waste 2 or 3 days of my vacation waiting
for a repair job). My son has it in storage so he could take it to a bike shop if I can tell him
what to have done. I do have a fair amount of experience swapping out components other than BB and
headset, so would be willing to take a shot at it if I know what I need to do.

My '99 Vision also developed "indexed" steering. I didn't notice it much at cruising speed, but at
slow speeds it was REALLY hard to turn.

From my experience I feel confident in suggesting that the races will be damaged, not just the
bearings - meaning you need a new headset. Having a new headset installed is probably only about
$25. I's not hard to do, but you need to measure for the correct length, and you need a special tool
to seat it, so just take it to a shop. I did it myself, but the mechanic was there to show me how
and hand me the tools. They should be able to do it while you wait if they aren't too busy.

According to Jobst Brandt, Shimano, Cane Creek and Chris King headsets are the least prone to suffer
the fretting damage that causes "indexed" steering.
