Barnett's manual suggests not re-using the ball bearing retainer when replacing bal bearings in a headset. Instead, he recommends installing the bearings loose in the cup. My headset has an O-ring seal that sits on top of the retainer. I'm wondering if it's OK to remove the retainer and reinstall the O-ring which will now be sitting on top of the bearings. it seems to me that the O-ring will get chewed up by the bearings.
