Headphones while riding?

I like to use the simultaneous bell/yell method myself..
And what is with people riding bikes with no lights.. front or back. They are so cheap to buy.. I have no sympathy for people who dont wear a helmet and use lights etc. I just hope that not too much of my tax payers dollar goes towards your medical bills.

Don't know 'bout the legalities, but I wear 2 buds on a bike path, 1 on the
road (left ear as cars pass on the right).

and have a chat with your local neighbourhood magistrate
next time you're passing the courthouse.

It's illegal here in Vic for bicycles not to have lights.
And before Zebee starts getting up in arms about the
bleeding obvious check out the Road Safety (General)
Regulations 1999, Schedule 4, Traffic Infringement Code 2228
'Fail to have lights or equipment', Penalty $50. Then
there's Code 2229 'Riding improperly', Penalty $50 and Code
2230 'Misuse bicycle path, separated footpath or shared path
or footpath or fail to use bicycle lane', Penalty $50. Don't
forget Code 2233 'Fail to wear securely fitted approved
bicycle helmet', Penalty $50 and Code 2234 'Use a bicycle to
carry a person who is not wearing a securely fitted approved
bicycle helmet', Penalty $50.

Oh, and for the sake of the record (because it's a question
that keeps coming up time and again), Code 2232 'Ride more
than 2 abreast', Penalty $50.

I don't need to. You are the one making the claim, you get
to back it up.

And while you are at it you can explain the difference
between "wearing headphones" and "so loud you can't hear
ambulances", plus you can show which bicycle portable
soundsystems can do that when earplugs can't.

And you can show how the law deals with deaf cyclists.

I regularly provide references, so much so I've had people
complain and tell me to back off. This one's not immediately
to hand because it's not in the Road Rules Regulations as
such, it's a matter of finding the relevant case law because
it falls under your general duty of care. If this once I
don't manage to remember where I found it my credibility
won't suffer one whit.

Each to their own, but when I ride I like to listen to the
birds, the wind through the trees, all the stuff I never get
to listen to commuting to the bloody city every day.

I use almost perfectly slick tyres (IRC Metro-Cross Duro)
that make for a super quiet ride. I like the only noises I
take with me being that of the freewheel (yeah, sometimes I
just coast :P) and maybe the well-oiled chain sliding though
the mechanisms. Of course sometimes there's the sound of the
kids fighting in the trailer, but my brane can just about
filter that out these days 😉

When I had a tyre blowout on tour, and couldn't find a
replacement slick, the road drone from the schwalbe
annoyed the [censored] out of me, and it's not like it's knobbly
or anything.

I like the creak of my loose cranks. And I have a loud
toy horn that makes people laugh, with a rusty chain
squeaking on the maladjusted derailuer. Not to mention
the broken spoke tinging on the rear stays. These are the
sounds that I love.

There's nothing in the National Road Rules about headphones.
My headphones, that I selected for the way they do NOT blockout traffic noise, do have a stupid manufactures disclaimer - not to be worn riding a bicycle.

I like to listen to the local radio and enjoy the traffic accidents.

I find the headphones do affect my hearing - being blasted by a horn no longer causes a momentary loss of control, usually a swerve to the right!; and the compliments yelled from the cars are even less intelligble. Both very good things.

I use headphones on my commute every day. Takes in roads, bike paths & single track (yes it is a fun commute).
I have had no probs hearing stuff around me, I don't have it up that high.
Still miss the odd opening car door etc, but my eyesight is still 20/20.

I agree wholeheartedly. Why should cyclists be denied the pleasure of listening to the local radio while travelling? And it does deaden those sudden noises which often scare the hell out of you.

Me too. I use an ipod with some sony headphones. Found the apple earbuds a distraction because they fall out frequently. Also find I can hear traffic easily enough with them on. I take one ear out when riding in packs though, to be sociable as much as anything. I have also never seen any traffic rule prohibiting them and totally agree that there is no difference between this situation and a car with its stereo up loud (except a car occupant is less likely to be killed in an accident with a bike....)!!

Personally, I always wear headphones when I ride and I turn it up as loud as I possibly can. So much, in fact, that riders passing me can probably hear it with ease.

The reason I do it is that I'm a bit of a deafie and can't hear trucks, let alone cars, until they're right next to me and they give me an almighty fright. The sound of cars actually freaks me out more than the cars themselves.

I agree with many - that if I'm going to be mowed down from behind, then I'm sure I'd be mowed down regardless of whether or not I'm listening to music. And besides, if I'm going to die, I might as well die doing something I love, and listening to good music.
