I have an older (2003) Trek 8000 and it's time to replace the headset. I’m looking at a Cane Creek IS-3 or S-3 replacement. Which do you feel is preferable since they are the same price?

I believe that the IS-3 is an INTERNAL headset which may-or-may-not fit your frame ...
The S-3 is an EXTERNAL headset ... and, if your frame currently has an external headset, it is the one you want to buy.

Start by making sure you get the right type of head set. Head sets can very quite a bit, with different seat angles, diameters, and installation types: internal, external........An LBS that sells Treks should be able to help you, as could an email or phone call to Trek. Have you checked the owner's manual to see if it gives a head set spec?
It's also possible that if you're patient, some one here will respond with the info you need.
FWIW, the Cane Creek website now has a head set selector, in which it tells you what head set you need based on the manufacturer, model, and year of the bike.
