How much do the hamstrings come into play during cycling - specifically, climbing hills while seated and pushing bigger gears on flat fast-paced rides? Any ideas on the percentage of work the hamstrings do during these tasks compared to the quads and other muscles?

I'm not sure of the percentages - but given my previous position - it was alot on my hamstrings! I strained mine a few weeks ago, and am just not allowed back on the bike to work back. So far, it's been easy rides - but if these are any indication of where i'll be in a few weeks... yikes... time to give up riding! -
Leg strength shouldn't be that much of a hindrance when you climb. It depends whether you choose to spin, alternate sitting and standing, as opposed to turning a big cog. You can develop your hamstrings by doing stiff-legged deadlifts or maybe leg-curls if you wish but cycling alone should develop the leg muscles sufficiently. Climbing is more a question of technique and practice.
One exception is the lower back. The lower back is used a lot when you climb and may benefit from some resistance exercise (in my view).lorrod said:

My personal experience is that strong hamstrings and glutes (and a lower back)can be a huge advantage on a climb. Mine are very developed due to years of rowing. When I get to a hill, I tend to sit up, shift back on my seat a little to utilize these muscles better. Not sure as to a percent. In terms of muscle recruitment it can only help.
