Just to follow up a previous thread, I've seen half-links on Ebay, the sellers of which claim will give the necessary scope for chain adjustment if a frame only has vertical dropouts.
Can anyone confirm that's true, please? Or should I just keep searching for an old racer.

A half link gives the equivalent of about 1/4" movement at the rear axle - it can help with short horizontal dropouts, but probably isn't enough for vertical dropouts.
