As my increasingly addled brain recalls, the Plasma range were a Sachs design which got the SRAM
logo on it after the takeover. I haven't owned a set of the Plasmas, but I had the Sachs Wavey
shifters (which were a good deal cheaper) which were Shimano compatible. I thought they were the
best interpretation of the twist-shifter type genre to date, and I've met many other riders who felt
the same. Nice solid action, plenty of grip in goopy conditions, and sensible cable routing compared
to the insane loop and cam action of the contemporary SRAM [censored].

Not exactly answering your question, but I'd give them a try. IIRC, they were about 45 UKP (bout
60US?) when new.

The main difference between Sachs shifters like the Powergrip and SRAM shifters at the time was that
the Sachs shifter pushed the cable into the housing as you shifted down while the old SRAM shifter
relied on the derailleur spring to pull the cable through the housing. Just about that time Shimano
starts putting weaker springs in their derailleur, totally screwing SRAM shifters and just about
killing the company. SRAM came out with the "Bass Worm" and aftermarket people also came out with
stiffer derailleur springs but it was a bandaide solution to a problem that required a redesign. The
Sachs shifters were unaffected. Now all SRAM shifters are of the Sachs design so there's nothing to
complain about except that shimano still puts marshmallows in their deraileurs for springs and they
wear out much too fast.
