Planning a multi week cycle across US.
Is there any type of GPS transmitter (lightweight) that could let some else
know close where I am- guessing they need a receiver or internet setup
somehow.I'll have a cell phone, but charging it and reception will be an
issue.
I've heard about them for teenagers in cars, so I suppose there must be some
solution

Not exactly cheap but:
That is for a system with auto-updates. You could get something much
cheaper ($150) that would require manual downloading from the unit to
say a laptop, then uploading to a web-site or someting for people to
see where you have been. It wouldn't be of much use for folks to see
where you are at any given moment.
If you only want people to be able to find out where you are at any
given moment, amybe you can use some sort of GSM locating service
offered by a cellular carrier. The phone company can figure out where
your GSM phone is based on triangulating it's signal. If they offer
some commercialized variant of this info, your in business! Here in
Norway this type of info is available (in a limited fashion) as "SMS
Positioning" products.
