Until garmin do a Deal with the OS you are pretty much stuck. You can
make your own maps (quite good fun, once you get into it) using
something like Oziexplorer, Mapedit, and cGPSmapper (but you'll need
paper maps to scan and trace, manually (old ones if you want to avoid
copyright issues) .. and lots of patience). Or you can take a tracklog
from your GPS, and run it through that system to produce a .img map file
you can load back 'for next time'. Ditto waypoints.
I haven't done the SE, but if you want to see what a week or two's work

(More detail than anyone could possibly need, for the bits surveyed).
I can also let you have a contour map for your area (1 degree 'square'
of latitude/longitude) but if you're in a flat bit, that may not be very
exciting (I mean all of Lincolnshire and Norfolk own about 5 contours
between the lot of them. 8>.).
