  1. Hey MFWers,

I'm Martha, a long time low-carber and newbie at weight training (well,
actually I was fairly enthusiastic - although not knowledgable - 20 years
ago, but that was 20 years ago).

I just started working out w/ a trainer recently and, for reasons that
seemed good at the time, I decided to try a TKD to improve my workouts.
So, yesterday, I had 8 sweettarts before my workout and about 8 after - a
total of 28 grams of carbs. I don't strictly count my carbs, and I have a
fair amount of variation from day to day. I'd say I vary from a low of 20
to a high of around 60, depending on my food choices for the day. So,
adding 28 g carbs is w/in my normal range.

Had my workout and it went fairly well. Woke up this morning, no
particular stiffness or soreness. However, at work, after I'd had my
morning Diet Coke, I noticed that my arms felt quite swollen. Not all the
way up and down - my hands and wrists aren't swollen at all and I'm not
appreciably puffy in my shoulders - but the middle 2/3rds around my elbows
are quite large. When I got home, I measured my calves and they're about
an inch bigger than they were on Sat. Nothing is particularly painful,
although now I'm a bit stiff in places.

Because the swelling is localized, I'm not worried that it's a circulatory
problem, and it's clearly not an allergic reation. The affected areas of
my arms and my calves are indeed the areas I worked hardest last night, so
it seems reasonable that this is tied to my workout. But the degree of
swelling seems really excessive. Could a TKD of only 28g of carb really
make that big a difference? The workout in itself was definitely not so
demanding as to cause this sort of swelling, and I'm not unusually prone
    to edema.

Naturally, when I work out for the rest of the week I'll give the TKD a
miss and if I do try it again I'll start much lower. Like, maybe 1
    sweettart before and 1 after.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Martha

What bodyparts exactly did you work out? Full body or what? How much did
you do on those body part and how long, exactly, have you been doing it?
    Was your trainer there?
