Can anyone tell me the route up Gordale Scar near Malham? I went in there from the bottom the other day, but couldn't see any obvious way up the waterfall at the bottom. I might have been a little reticent in my investigation because of the hordes of schoolkids at the scar, but even so from where I was it didn't look too easy! There was a fair flow of water, too. How is the route after the waterfall?
I ended up going through the open access land in the next gully to the west to get to the top.

Iirc, you climb up the middle, with the waterfall on your right. It's fairly worn and I've only navigated it coming down which can be pretty tricky especially if your kids are with you and relying on you not to kill them ;-) Further up there are some badly eroded patches before you start to get up onto the flatter land.

Tis some years since i did the route. But it was just a scramble; as has been pointed out in varying posts about the matter in heavy wet weather its not overly easy. Unless you like getting wet and care with placement of feet on wet rock. The problem of slipping does lead to one taking care and maybe holding up the more zealous adventurers behind But in 'dry' conditions its interesting and after the initial waterfall just a climb/scramble up a defile to the tops at Seaty hill the alternative route you used is longer by a mile but is the one given in books re getting up Gordale scar.

Ah well that probably explains it, there were waterfalls to the left and right, and the middle didn't look too inviting either, so I guess the stream was a bit up!
One website I googled suggested the left side, but there was a waterfall there, hence my confusion.

It's on huge bucket holds up the middle buttress. The tricky bit in wet weather is getting through the stream to the foot of the buttress with dry feet.
