  1. On my way to work at 1400 today I met a Dutch couple on their way to the Hull - Rotterdam ferry
after having cycled from Lincoln, about 40 miles away, through a thunder storm. They were looking
puzzled at their North Sea Cycle route map, so I took pity on them and bade them a cheery "Goede
Avond" and asked them in Dutch if they were going to the ferry.

Turned out they were cycling from Esbjerg to Harwich and then to Hull, then back to R'dam. I had to
ride with them through the east Hull badlands and asked if they had good tyres on as they'd be
tested on the cycle tracks. After about 5 miles we reached the last roundabout before the ferry and
then the bloke pulled up with a puncture. Luckily, he only had 1/2 mile to go and we shook hands
and I went off to work having done my bit for the city image. Simon Mason
