He wants 900 bucks for it, here's the convo from another mate. Is this a good buy? I'm looking for an entry level mountain bike to have fun and do rail trails.

What was the original purchase price? MTBs have a hard life, so you should be aiming for no more than 50% of retail for a "good" deal. The tyre price seems hopeful - Phantom has them from $48.95 to $79.95.
I'd say you could do better. Depends a bit of the condition of the bike I suppose (at that age, does the drivechain need replacing?), but I'd just go for something new. 2005 model perhaps.

Race quality yes, $120 no. My LBS has em for $80 and of course they can be found for less. There are also tires which are just as good for a lot less. Not to mention if they are worn you'll need new ones anyway.
