I just recently bought a hybrid/cross bike. Here's a link... raleighusa.comitems.aspOpen ↗ . It's real easy to get around on and rugged enough to take off road (though I don't push my luck when offroad, more sight seeing than anything). I don't know too much about which name brands are better than others. As long as it functions properly, I could care less what name is printed on the side.
