  1. Golden Corn Bread

from my grandmother's collection. The date has faded out, but the recipe
card is well worn and has lots of stains on it so I am guessing it is very
old. It has to be at least 60 years old because she died
.. (unfortunately I never knew her, but my aunts and great aunts tell me
she was a fabulous cook). She had 13 children, so she was used to cooking.

    1 cup yellow corn meal
    1 cup sifted flour
    1/4 cup sugar
    3 teaspoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/4 cup shortening
    1 cup milk
    1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 425. Combine corn meal, flour, sugar, baking powder and
salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening. Mix egg and milk together and add to
dry ingredients with a few swift strokes. Bake in a cast iron skillet for
    20 25 minutes.
