Pair break record by more than 11 hours

It's pretty safe to say that nobody in history celebrated a 48th
birthday like Pete Maisel.

Maisel greeted his big day yesterday, alongside girlfriend Wendy
Gardiner, as they shattered the current world record for stationary
cycling.

For 96 hours, 4 minutes and 8 seconds, the couple pedaled stationary
bikes outside Zumwalt's Bicycle Center, racing past the current record
by more than 11 hours, a time that has not yet been certified by
Guinness.

Why 96:04:08?

"You gotta stop sometime," said Maisel, a former Marine and veteran
firefighter.

They rode in front of Zumwalt's Bicycle Center to raise money and
awareness for the San Diego Burn Institute, the Georgia Firefighters
Burn Foundation and to raise money to pay their expenses for the
upcoming Race Across America, a transcontinental bicycle race.
Donations came in from their Web site and through the bicycle center.

In the end, after smearing each other's faces with Maisel's chocolate
birthday cake, they celebrated over breakfast at Denny's (the Meat
Lover's Grand Slam) and then a very long nap.

They'll worry about the details later, like certifying their feat with
the Guinness World Record people and counting how much money their
five-day jaunt raised.

Maisel said he chose Zumwalt's because eight years ago, when he
weighed 265 pounds, the center helped him change his life. Now he's
nearly 100 pounds lighter and rides as many as seven hours a day, all
the way from his Rancho San Diego home to Julian.

Pete and Wendy are NUTS! They do RAAMs and other ultra endurance events
like they're weekend fun rides. I need a nap after almost anything...

Sort of. On the bike shop's website you can read the history of
Zumwalts. In the early 80s I used to go to their original location in
North Park. It wasn't my favorite bike shop, however, mainly because
of the personalities of some of the employees.

So Peter, interesting that you swapped the sunny San Diego cycling
weather for the Colorado cycling environment. Which is better?
