Giro gear question, Stage 4

  1. In the live report of Stage 4, Giro d'Italia we are told

    17:24 CEST Julio Prez (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) last
    win came with the 2005 Giro del Trentino. He is using a
    53x29 gearing.

    Is this 53/29 that is equivalent to 39/21?
    Any comments on his set up and
    what it is meant to accomplish?
    Would these guys need a gear lower than 39/25?

    Probably trying to break his chain again. I think this is the same rider
    that broke his chain in the Giro and the Tour in the same year.
