Hello - I'm new to biking and would like advice on a good bike and training. Here is the story. I'm 40 years old and have been a runner since my teens. While this has kept me fairly fit (6'1", 175 lbs), it has been hard on the joints. I'm now starting to transition to biking. I rode a bit in college and had a fairly decent road bike, but quit riding after a nasty crash.
A couple of weeks ago I dusted off the old bike, splashed some oil on the chain and headed out. Much to my surprise I loved it. Since then I've been averaging about 20 to 25 miles a day on a very hilly route. My average speed has increased to 18.1 mph and on Sunday I completed a 30 miler at 17.7 mph. The bike I am riding is dreadful. It is my old bike from the college days and literally has rust on the wheels. (You can hear me coming!)
So here are my questions: First, I desperately need a new bike. My budget is approximately $1000, give or take. I've looked at a Specialized Roubaix. Any suggestions?
Second, Is there and especially good book on training that you would recomend?
Finally, are there any common mistakes that I should avoid?
Thanks for your help.
Joe
