I am somebody who has spent most of their life riding bikes, but I have never known how to get involved in racing, and what standard of kit i would need. Can somebody give me a few hints and tips. I am in the uk by the way.

I can imagine there are a lots of racing going on in Great Britania !? Or Not?
Anyway, just contact your local Bike-club or buy a Bike -Mag (i know for sure there is at least one in UK) and read!
Do not be shy and ignor the KaKi [censored] (just in case) at Start.
Trust me we all started that way and if not you are not a true mountainbiker cause you did not went through the progress!
Mountainbiking is a friendly sport, Mountainbikers help eachother, not in Berlin dough, but everywhere else.
Sooo Buddy take a deep breath, RRRREEEELLLLAAAAXXXX and go racing.
I promise you would not experience anything like it.
