I recently bought a used Trek 400 and now after riding a the past couple of days I've noticed some gear problems. As I was riding today I noticed that when switching gears it does so rather hard, like slamming into gear. The whole ride I can hear somewhat of a small clicking sound as I pedal. Also, the other shifter will not drop the chain onto the second gear ring. My bike has down tube shifters if that matters. Any ideas or suggestions?

WD-40 makes wonders, try that first on every moving part of your drive train (shifters, derraileurs) try then to loose a little bit the shifters bolt into the frame, but not so much that it becomes completely loose, if the problems continue go to a bike shop for them to straight things up, it might be necessary to adjust the shifting and check up cables for example, everything mechanic has a solution i think you did a good purchase,

Clean, lubricate and adjust. Replace worn or damaged parts.
The Park Tool website has video instructions on how to detail clean, lubricate and adjust just about every part on your bike.
Get out your wrench sets and go over every fastener on the bike, for safety's sake.
