  1. I've got a box full of bits, spares and impulse Ebay purchases that I'm
trying to turn in to a bike.
The current setup that's giving me a problem is a Shimano XT 8 speed
shifter/Campag Olympus MTB derailleur & choice of Shimano XT or DuraAce 8sp
    Cassette.
I have a problem with shifting as the spacing of either cassette does not
appear to match the shift pattern.
I have a feeling the derailleur is incompatible. I have a Suntour XC600 that
I could also try but it needs new jockey wheels so as yet it's not tested.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Adrian.

Get hold of a Shimano rear derailleur, as the cable pull has to match
the shifters. Almost any Shimano derailleur will do, the main exception
    being old Dura-Ace.

Bingo. You can make it work with a ShiftMate, though:

You expect all this to be cross-compatible? No such luck. Use the
Shimano XT shifter and cassette, and get a Shimano derailleur to go with
'em. Since the Campy mountain bike stuff is rather sought-after, you can
probably sell the derailleur for enough to get the one you need.

Respacing the cassette with 3.2 mm spacers will cost more than getting
a good, inexpensive, Shimano rear derailleur.
