Usually I use the option that's available on the rear cog - avoiding to use the front shifter.
But it's a question of where the cogs are, and how the gearing performs. A 53:19 combination might twist the chain - typical if 19 is the second lowest cog. 39:14 might result in the same, or make the chain rub the outer ring - typical if 14 is the second lowest cog.
