GB Quill Stem - safe insertion point ?

    I have a vintage GB stem that I want to pull up to the maximum
    height. However, it is not marked with a max height. I have several
    other GB stems, same deal, no markings.

    The stem uses a flat type wedge and the expansion slot is about one
    inch in length from the bottom. If I make sure that there is another
    inch in the fork (total of two inches)is that adequate to be safe?
