  1. Hi All

    X-posted a.s.d m.h.d.

So much to learn, so little time, and a failing memory and
    intellect.

I know the old-timers will know about this one, but after
being diagnosed T2 for two years now, the doc just tested
me for fructosamine for the first time. I passed the test
(201, range 190-285) but it led me to find out what it
was. It turns out that, in my terms, it's a sort of short-
    term HbA1c.

So, for the edification of those like me who have never
    heard of it:

    Fructosamine test joslin.harvard.edul
ibrary/fructosamine_test.shtml A fructosamine test has been
available through laboratories since the early 1980s. The
main advantage of the test is that it can detect overall
changes in blood glucose control within a few weeks, rather
than months. Fructosamine levels indicate the level of blood
glucose control over the past two or three weeks. So, when
changes are being made in a diabetes treatment plan, this
test can indicate in a more timely fashion than an A1c test
how well the changes are working and whether other changes
should be considered. Currently, this test must be ordered
and performed by your healthcare provider.

I also discovered a site for converting fructosamine to
average BGs. I won't comment on it's validity, as it belongs
to a site for people "owned by diabetic cats":
    sugarcats.comfructosamine.asp Make
your own judgements - interesting site though :-)

Yup, that's about it. I once asked my doc what he
thought of the fructosamine test, and he replied
that he saw no value in it. That puzzled me until
I sussed out the situation. The he only saw me
every three months which is the same period of
time the A1c covers. As the fructosamine test
covered about two weeks, it would give him less
    information than the A1c.

However, at the time a fructosamine meter was
available for home use, which, as I recall, was
called the In-Charge. I seemed like a good idea
since it gave me 2-week feedback on how good my over
all control was. I thought that was pretty handy.
Unfortunately, the meter was a bust and was taken
off the market. Apparently they found that storing
test strips at room temperature spoiled them. I
guess that explains why my readings were so erratic.
    Big disappointment.
