Front mech question

The main difference is based upon the design of your frame. Bottom swing
derailluers require more room which may not work with some frames. Some
frames will accommodate either, while some frames, such as road bikes, may
require a bottom swing because of the water cage braze-ons. Frames such as
the '04 SC Heckler I'm building require a top swing because the suspension
linkage takes up alot of room on the seat tube.

Bottom swing is better.

Sometimes you can put a bottom-swing derailleur on a bike between the cage
bolts and use washers to space out the bottle cage from the seat tube.
