Front Derailleur Size Mis-match

I agree - it sounds like a crimped seat tube waiting to happen.

In my experience, what usually happens is the derailleur might do the job ok, but you DO end up
crimping the tube a bit..and it's not so bad structurally, in my opinion, but you can never adjust
the damn derailleur again after that for swing angle and height! It always clunks back down into the
dimples you just created! Spare yourself the agony and get the right size!
