Hi,
I've been trying to put together an MTB from scratch and
have got it all going fine except the front derailleur
(Shimano Deore FD-M510) which I am trying to use with a
Shimano FC-TY33 chainwheel. The derailleur instructions
recommend a chainwheel teeth combination of 44-32-22 but the
FC-TY33 has 48-38-28. The derailleur instructions also
advise a front chainwheel tooth difference of 22 and a min
difference between top and intermediate rings of 12 teeth.
Does anyone know if this difference is sufficient to cause
problems? (Both were sold to me by my LBS together).
The problems I've been having are:
1) I had to raise the front derailleur so the outer plater
was well over 5mm above the outer chainring as otherwise
the inner plate would catch the middle chain ring.
2) Although the chain shifts reliably, I just can't get the
cable tension adjusted properly to prevent rubbing
between the plates and chainrings in the lowest and
highest gear combinations.
I tried following Shimano's instructions, Sheldon's and Park
Tools all to the letter. In desparation I've left the bike
at the LBS to be looked at, but am concerned there may still
be a problem of compatibility that will be forever giving me
problems in the future.
