Even the "best" won't shift right if it's not adjusted correctly.

Sounds like either something's not set up properly or you're not holding the
shift lever in place for a moment after you shift. The later issue is
significant for many; sometimes when a bike is new, it will shift fine
without doing so, but as the chain breaks in a bit and becomes more
flexible, shifts in the direction of a larger chainring need a little bit of
help. This is true for road, mtn and hybrid bikes; it's not something
particular to your bike.

Or it could just be a simple adjustment. What did the store say?

One should spend as little money or time on front mechs as possible.
They are terribly boring. Set it up properly, then have some butter
pecan ice cream as a reward.
