Just got a 2010 GT Avalanche 1.0 and it has the Shimano Deore front derailer. I'm having a problem with it engaging 1st gear from 2nd gear, but no problem engaging 2nd from 1st. I've slowed down my pedaling when trying to switch gears, and even lightened my feet on the pedals to take added "drag" off the pedals, but the chain just spins and spins. On level road, this doesn't happen; only on an ascending hill.
you might just need a tune up. I had the same problem on my road bike. I had a few pro shops adjust my front dérailleur and i still had the problem. My bike was brand new and i couldn't get it to shift smoothly. someone suggested i changed the big chain ring from FSA to shimano i did one better i got rid of the FSA crankset and installed shimano ultegra now the bike is perfect.

Considering the [censored] job they did of assembling my bike, I may just bring it back and tell them to fix it right. Unfortunately, I'm 2.5 hours away from the shop where I bought it. 😠
