Front der without housing stop

What kind of shifters? Down tube shifters usually don't use any housing on
the front der cable. STI/Ergo shifters only use a housing between the
shifter and a down tube or head tube stop. If your frame doesn't have a
stop, you can get a clamp on stop.

It sounds like you expected the front der to have a housing stop.

It's a very common type of bottom-pull unit. The cable routes under
the BB across a grooved plastic shoe thingy; the cable housing on such
a setup ends at a ferrule on the downtube, generally up near the head
tube. If your current setup is for a top-pull, or has the cable
housing going direct to the der, you've got some work to do if you
want to use that der.

A trip to any lbs will provide plenty of examples of this type of
setup. It's the most common arrangement on new and recent bikes in my
experience.

Older ones often did (e.g. various Suntour models including cyclone).
I had this problem when replacing an old Suntour front der of 1970's
vintage. In the end I hacksawed/filed off the old front der, just
leaving the cable stop and band. I then mounted this below the new
der to provide a separate cable stop. Doesn't look too bad.

An alternative would be adding an under bottom bracket cable guide,
eliminating the need for a cable stop for the front der.

Most don't. Originally, the cable left a downtube lever, went under a
guide, then pulled the cable attachment arm from underneath. Now, if
you're using either Ergo or bar-ends, there ought to be a stop on the
downtube for cable housing.

Also back then, the only cable housing at all was between an eyelet on
the right chain stay and the rear derailleur - same as now.

BTW, if you can get that for a dollar, grab it!
