During the 39-46 war in the UK one could buy a packet of fritter mix called
Frizets. We were pretty short on eggs and bacon etc so anything to help at
breakfast time was welcome and we were served them often!
For many of us those things are a happy memory (Usually dad had bacon if
there was any and the kids had Frizets cooked in dad's bacon fat). They
were withdrawn some years ago and there has been quite a lot of chat on
blogs etc looking for a recipe to copycat them.
After some time trying this is as close as I can come (at 75 my memory may
be more than hazy)
FRIZETS
1/2 cup of "Mushie Peas"
(dried green peas soaked overnight and boiled with a little bi-carb added
until they mush)
1/2 cup of Chana flour (Chick-pea flour - it has other names too)
1/2 tsp Curry Paste
1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Onion Powder
1/4 tsp Celery Salt
Dash Black Pepper
1 egg beaten
About 1/3 cup of milk
Mix the mushie peas, flour and spicing - mashing the peas well then stir in
the beaten egg and add milk until you have a thick paste. It should be thick
enough to shake off a spoon and spread but not sloppy. Give it a good
beating with a fork to me sure it is well blended.
Melt a little oil (or bacon fat) in a good fryingpan and drop spoonfuls into
the hot fat. Cook on a medium heat until the bottoms are brown then flip
them and repeat on the other side
Serve with bacon and eggs as a breakfast dish.
Enjoy !
