What exactly is the difference between Freewheels and cassettes. The reason being is I am going to be purchasing a new set of wheels to replace my original ones that came on my MTB. And I have 7 speed (already have the spacer) anyways the new rims are shimano 8/9 compatible so I take it i will need to buy a cassette over a freewheel. Just wondering what the difference was

The couple of links that follow do a much better job of explaining it than I. Basically a freewheel consists of the cogs and ratcheting mechanism as a unit that screws on to a fixed hub. A cassette is just the cog assembly that slips onto a splined interface on a freehub (ratcheting mechanism is part of the hub assembly). See:
