its a balance thing...it takes practice and most ppl who switch to freeriding started in BMX, like my self...so alot of us freeriders have previous practice on a more manouverable street/urban bike

I would start with putting your front tire on a rock of a wall, then practice hopping. That never works for me though. You need a good back brake. Or, you can start with an endo, as you fall, lock your back brake, and when the back tire hit the ground, pull your handlebars up and move your weight back.
