I have a older Shimano Sante (7sp) equipped bike with rear wheel wobble. Here are the characteristics: 1) Rear wheel is true 2) With Rear cones adjusted correctly (slight play to the hand) there is wobble when placed in the frame 3) With rear cones adjusted tight the wobble goes away 4) Cones have some wear but look fine 5) Play is seen in the freehub (don't really have a reference to say if its excessive)
My diagnosis is that I need a fresh freehub......the play in the freehub allows the wheel wobble unless the hub cones are adjusted tight enough to take the play out of the freehub. Sound reasonable? Thanks, Barbour Warren

more likely that the freehub is loose on the hub. Remove the axle and see if you can tighten the freehub with a 10 mm hexkey from the RH side (I might be wrong here, there were a few other designs floating around at that time, but in that case there is nothing you can do)

Get the QR tighter to compress the axle and take up the clearance?

Freehubs nearly always have some play. The bearings are low quality but they don't have to carry any real loads, so it doesn't matter.

Freehubs only usually need replacing when there is a failure to drive or a failure to freewheel.

If there's play with the QR clamped, the cones are not correctly adjusted. Until the QR is clamped, play and wobble is irrelevant except that the hub needs to have just enough play with the QR loose that it will have none with the QR tight. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. Some gardening required to reply via email. Words processed in a facility that contains nuts.
