Hi,
via its web site, the Scottish Mountaineering Club has made available free
contour maps for loading into Garmin GPS that take down loadable maps.
These were created by Dave Storey. (He posts to this group as GSV @ ...)

In summary, they were created from space shuttle data using public domain
data and software. I've used them several times and they are great!
You need a GPS that accepts maps, such as a Garmin Vista or Legend C.
As you move, the contour map updates on screen - brilliant!
The downloads are around 10mb each, but if you have that sort of GPS
either you have broadband, or can afford a long phone call at times 8-)
This is a whole new dimension for GPS users, but there will be errors
between the space shuttle measurements, the interpolated contour lines and
the real ground - so no guarantee of accuracy.
