  1. Those of us who tend to get into the 'what does this <insert piece of
kit> weigh' - you know who you are :-) (I do) will be somewhat
chastened (I was) by my experience last week of putting on a full
    British Army infantry pack - including weapons belt = 50kg = 110lbs =
    7st 12lbs

I RTW'ed backpacking with a 20kg sack, that felt heavy enough.

    Pen-Y-Fan horseshoe with 50kg on....3 times? At the double?....blimey!

And the top competitors run the KIMM with only 15 kg between 2!

And then you get the LSW... And the radio.... Oh, and any other
junk/ammunition they think you need :-( And with all that kit, you don't
even get a 'proper' tent, cook set etc.....

    Nuts isn't it ?!

I wonder if they end up with spinal compression. Depends how often they do it I
    suppose.

There kit doesn't help; I bought a £20 army surplus sleeping bag for general use
like for dossing down in peoples homes, hoping that it would also serve for
backpacking. It weighs 3Kg and compresses to a mere 40 litres; so that'll be a
no then <g>. Much as dislike the idea of a 'proper' mummy bag, I'm going to have
    to get one.

I've no experience of backpacking and when I bought my rucksack, I looked on the
rucksack manufacturers website for a recommended comfortable maximum weight.
They said 30lb/13.6Kg, so I loaded it up as a test and it felt heavy; I wouldn't
want to be walking over rough/dangerous ground for any length of time at that
    weight.
