I haven't ridden since I was a child. I am wanting to start to get into shape. I just need something that I can ride on the bike path. I will eventually upgrade once I build up to riding on rougher terrain. What sort of price range should I be looking at for a starter bike, since I am intending to upgrade eventually?

Provided you know what size fits you, I would seek out something used. People lose interest in cycling all the time and great buys can be had. Ive seen $1,000 bikes for sale for like $300. Score a nice deal like that and you've already upgraded.
