  1. This website was discovered by Jim Chisholm of Cambridge Cycling
Campaign, and contains a very interesting document on footway and cycleway
construction & maintenance. In fact it's the best thing I've read
describing how it should be done. However I don't suppose that anything
has yet been built to this standard :-(

    The stated purpose is:
"Take a broad view of Footway and Cycletrack construction,
maintenance and management standards for all footways and cycletracks
within the United Kingdom with the aim of steering all relevant
research for which it is allocated responsibility by the Roads Board
    (or others)"

    Main website:
    http://footways.org/index.htm

    Construction & maintenance document:

  2. I only took a quick look. I must say that I am suspicious of any
document written by authors who cannot conceive of any vehicle not
being a motor vehicle and who, although they discuss bike lanes, have
apparently never heard of an advisory bike lane

I think that motor vehicles are quite frequent on bike paths, what
with maintenance, police, ambulances, stolen cars on their way to
being torched, and so on. Bike paths should be built to take those.

The document says that it is most important to think about bike
safety on roadways, but fails to note that when bike go along a
roadway most accidents are intersection related.
