  1. The 1996 Giro.

    The penultimate stage is huge, going over five climbs. The
    last of these is the Mortirolo.

    Olano and Tonkov are dead even on time. Olano is wearing pink
    on the tiebreaker. Time trials are timed to the hundredths of
    a second. Olano leads by 0.46 seconds.

    At the base of the Mortirolo they are still together. If Olano
    can just make it to the top with Tonkov, he wins. The attacks
    come and what is left of the leading group shatters. Olano is
    dropped and the race is gone for him.

    I was thinking a lot of Tonkov and Olano during the stage
    today.
