For Hippy, FD and others who may like to have a look. I have finally posted
some pics of my fixie on the web.

http://tinyurl.com/4xqx6

It's a 1988 Elizabeth Star Cycles (South Australian Company) Road/TT bike
with the Miche derailers etc removed and the rear wheel redished. With the
exception of the saddle, the computer, and the 15 tooth DA Track Cog the
bike is completely original.

As far as future upgrades, I intend on replacing the road hubs, which have
seen better days, with new track ones and maybe getting a set of water
bottle cage braise-ons added to the seat tube to give me more water carrying
capacity to allow me a little more range.

That's a steep lookin' frame.. do you get a sore back? :)
I like those slotted brake levers. Go the triathlon tyres! :)
Where did you find it? Was it yours? Aussie built race bikes are cool.
You might need some pedals though.. ;)

I have a set of brand new Miche hubs here.. I haven't decided yet what
I'm going to do with them. I might still build another set of wheels for
Vegemite or maybe some nice aero ones for the track bike and Vege can
have my current track wheels.. hmm...

I've had this bike since new. It went into semi-retirement when the STI
equipped new bike arrived in 1999. I couldn't bear to part with it so, a
couple of years ago now, when the idea of fixed gear road training was put
into my head, the fact that you can screw a cog onto a freewheel hub thread
and the dropouts being suitable for the purpose, this bike was the obvious
candidate. Although the frame angle looks pretty steep it's actually not
that much different to my position when riding on the hoods of my road bike.
Oh the Pedals... Time Criterium Pros, they are currently on the road bike.
I do have a set of Keywin CRM's but they have the track adaptor installed
with the pins glued in place (for track of course). Far too dangerous to
ride these with the track adaptor in place on the road. Should the
mechanism engage there is no way you can get your foot off of the pedal
(unless you physically disengage it of course) . Must get another set of
these pedals to try on the road.

I've been trying to decide what replacement hubs this beast is going to get.
I was thinking Suzue but am now tossing up between a set of Miche or Surly
hubs. Too many choices!!! All I know is they're going to be 36 hole hubs.

As for your Vegemite I personally would choose the lesser quality of the of
all the track hubs you have for this bike and get hold of some old 27" rims
(the plus of this is your brake reach problem will be solved and the tyres
are cheap - Conti Gatorskins come in 27"). Save your better hubs for
building up your track wheelset. But that said the matching Miche hubs and
cranks would look pretty cool on Vege. Do you still have that set of wheels
with the singles and those sweeeet looking Campag Hubs?

I have an old set of Look pedals that came with
my track bike you can have cheap-like :)

Particular reason for 36 and not 32 or less?

I might just end up doing this, although I was trying hard
to avoid 27" wheels. Do you have any suggestions for
nice 27" rims? I'd prefer something deep profiled purely
for looks (this IS a toy bike after all..). Velocity don't
seem to do 27". I could always bin-scab some but I'd
like new ones..

What about rims for the track if I was to lace them to
the Miche hubs - what would you suggest in this case?

Yeah, those singles have Record hubs and live in my
spare bedroom. They might be used if I ever get good
enough to race on a track suited to them but I don't
know anything about singles so my fear of the unknown
prevents me using them elsewhere... plus the tyres cost
too much (so I've heard..).

cheers!

Look Pedals, no thanks.
I can't say that I'm a fan of Look pedals. I have tried them but I soon
went back to the Time pedals. Looks just didn't feel right for me (I think
it may have been the increase in stack height that was reason). The Keywin
CRMs are fixed (I've got them set in fixed mode) and have a similar stack
height to the Time pedal. The lack of float took a little to get used to
but now for Track use I think they are great. If I was to get another set
for the road I would give the floating mode a try.

GemmaK: Did you end up getting a set of Keywins? I noticed you had bid on
some on Ebay a while back.

Yes, the rims I have are 36 hole. ;-)

Weinmann and Sun made some good 27" rims but I can't say that I've seen any
profile other than a box section. The ones on my fixie are Weinmann (made
in Belgium) and have eyelets. If your after a set of 27s I guess you'll be
looking at secondhand but you never know what you might find new in the
right bike shop (Abbotsford Cycles or similar). Getting the hole count to
match your hubs might be a bit tricky though.

If your looking at aero type clincher rims for training on that are also
good as a racing spare my suggestion would be a road rim along the lines of
a Mavic CXP22 or CXP33, Velocity Deep-V or anything similar. From what I've
seen there are not too many track specific clincher rims out there.

If you are not too sure about the condition of these wheels and the tubulars
attached get them checked by your man at Croydon Cycleworks and see if he'll
show you what you need to know about them. Once you know these wheels are
safe to ride and the Blackburn track is dry and clear of broken glass give
them a try. You WILL enjoy the ride. If they are decent tubulars they will
ride very nicely. Yes, they can be expensive but so is a good clincher
tyre. Personally I use the Continental Tempo, a hard wearing tyre thats good
on both concrete and boards, which retails around the $135 mark but there
are other options at lower prices as well as much higher prices (eg Andre
Dugast)

As far as tracks that are suited to tubulars I have to say they all are,
however some tyre tread compounds will last longer than others when used on
concrete. I will pretty much always race on tubs with the exception of
midweek racing at Coburg where there always seems to be glass on the track.

I don't think I'm going to break it in a hurry. It and it's now shorter
twin however nearly broke my el cheapo Lifu chain tool (I needed two chains
to get the right length for a 51 - 17 (81") combination - Makes things
easier at training for swapping to a 91.8" or 98.4" as you dont need to
change the front ring).

>How many velodromes are around the NE suburbs of Melb??

None to the NE but 3 (soon to be four) to the North. Brunswick (333m),
Coburg (250m), Preston (approx 400) and the nearly completed Northcote/DISC
(250m indoor timber).

I was waiting until someone mentioned that.
That will be getting cut as soon as I can get hold of a stem with enough
rise to put the drop bars in the right position. I think a nice silver
Thomson stem is going to get this job in the very near future. I'm also on
the lookout for a Look Ergostem to mate up to a set of Profile bullhorns for
500m Time trials. More $$$

Yes.. he would.. mmm Campag Pista...

Forgive me if I don't upgrade my high spoke
count, boring, standard, box section-rimmed,
slow, hmmf! wheels.. at least until I start
winning something ;-)

I see what you mean with your chain. I thought
mine was chunky:

until I saw the one you are running!

Maybe I just can't see it in the pix, you have
a crank magnet, but where's the cadence sensor?

Campag Pista...laterally stiff, reasonably heavy but still a very nice fast
wheel.

Those nice campag record hubs you've got can be hot-rodded (ie a practice
where race wheels a cleaned of all grease from the hubs and are rebuilt with
nothing more than a light weight oil to lubricate them). Put a set of fast
tubulars on the rims and you will have yourself a quick set of race wheels.
If you were to add up the cost of how much those tubular wheels where to put
together I think you would be pretty pleased with what you have there.
Campag track hubs are not cheap.

I'll probably be looking at a similar chain to what you're running when I
upgrade the drivetrain on the fixie to 1/8".

It and the speed sensor are currently on the road bike. I've got a few
crank magnets so rather than removing it I just left it there. I usually
just mount the Polar Receiver on the seat post of the track bike to keep it
out of the way and to avoid the temptation to look at it whilst riding.

I like it! Extra speed (maybe) for free :)

Yeah, but they look boring! I want deep dish
carbon rims and low spoke count and carbon
spokes and a ti hub (just for some carbon
contrast ;-) )...

It's a KMC somethingorother BMX chain, ~$20.

I got a KMC chain from http://www.fortheriders.com/ (in BrisVegas) for
$12.95.....they also sell chainwheels, cogs, tensioners (not on website but
ask). I fitted a new drivetrain to my singlespeed conversion last week
(Chainring (38T), cog(16T), spacers, chain, tensioner, and a spare rear cog
(14T)) and the whole lot cost me just over $100. Michael was nothing but
helpful and the parts arived in Melb next day (postage was free).

Hopefully I will post some pics soon.

Seriously.. wait until I'm in latter stages of
training and I'll give it a go.. might have to
sneak out solo first in case I have to walk
up any of the hills ;-)

I actually rode the ss in to work today.

Did you get the Blackspire rings? What are they like?
Surly is making some nice looking ones too...
Actually those RaceFace ones look nice too.. damn.
TufNeck sprockets?

I need to replace my driveline quite soon so I'm on
the lookout for some bits.. almost bought some new
cranks on ebay the other day - probably should find
out if they fit first ;-)

Wow, just checked this page for crank size:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html#acera
Looks like the Acera-X's I have might have been recalled!
hahaha that's soo appropriate for the GT POS SS ;-)

hippy
